As we reflect on our county's rich history, this week marks significant events that shaped our community and its development. Here are some notable historical moments from September 29 to October 5:
September 29
- 1834: The First Christian Church of Fluvanna was organized, known today as the Disciples of Christ. This establishment contributed to the spiritual and social fabric of our community.
- 1862: The 154th Regiment departed from Camp Brown in Jamestown, a major local Civil War unit. This regiment played a critical role in the conflict, representing our county's dedication to service.
- 1889: A rather peculiar incident occurred when 18 prostitutes were fined in Jamestown city court. This event remains shrouded in mystery, with no clear explanation as to whether it was part of a clean-up campaign or if it was merely a convention.
- 1933: The new New York State Armory in Jamestown was formally opened, serving as a vital location for community events and military training.
- 1971: Jamestown's new city hall was dedicated, marking a modern era of local governance.
- 1990: Strider Field was dedicated in Jamestown, further enriching our recreational facilities and providing a space for community gatherings and sports.
September 30
- 1851: Harrison Williams, a fugitive slave, was captured in Busti by his owner from Virginia, highlighting the dark realities of slavery and the struggles for freedom during that era.
- 1909: The new Y.M.C.A. building opened in Jamestown, which served as a hub for community activities until its demolition.
- 1943: The first test flight of the drone bomber TDR-1 took place at Jamestown Airport, a secretive project that showcased local contributions to military innovation.
- 1985: Busti town government offices relocated to 121 Chautauqua Avenue, Lakewood, streamlining local governance.
- 1991: The last home milk delivery occurred in Dunkirk, signaling changes in local food distribution practices.
- 1996: Just before midnight, bus service ended in Jamestown, marking the end of an era for public transportation in the area.
October 1
- 1761: Sir William Johnson visited Barcelona, a key figure in 18th-century New York history, especially during the French and Indian War.
- 1852: A smallpox outbreak began in the poorhouse at Dewittville, emphasizing the public health challenges of the time.
- 1902: The Home Telephone Company of Jamestown was organized, laying the foundation for our region's telecommunications.
- 1938: Noted hammer dulcimer player Jesse Martin passed away. Martin's contributions to music were significant, with his performances helping to promote the instrument's heritage in Chautauqua County.
- 1941: The first issue of the Jamestown Post-Journal was published following the merger of the Post and Journal, shaping local news reporting.
- 1970: The first issue of Lakewood Story, a weekly newspaper, was published, contributing to local journalism.
October 2
- 1875: The steamboat Jamestown, the first of three of that name, burned at the Jamestown boat landing.
- 1894: The Fentonville depot burned, marking a loss for the local transportation infrastructure.
- 1939: Jamestown Airport was formally dedicated, enhancing travel and trade in the region.

- 1826: Fredonia Academy opened, establishing a foundation for education in our area.
