World Mental Health Day Recognized

MAYVILLE, N.Y. – Chautauqua County, New York, stands in solidarity with communities across the globe in recognizing October 10 as World Mental Health Day 2023. This year, while there is no formal proclamation, the essence of this day remains undiminished in its importance, emphasizing that mental well-being is a cornerstone of a thriving community.

The theme for this year, 'Mental Health is a Universal Human Right,' is not merely a statement. It's a call to action for everyone — from individuals to organizations, educators to policymakers — to recognize, prioritize, and champion mental health. Mental health is integral to the overall well-being of individuals and, by extension, our communities and societies.

In Chautauqua County, we believe that:

  • Every individual deserves the right to mental health resources and support.
  • Addressing and eliminating the stigma associated with mental health is paramount.
  • Mental health is as significant as physical health and should be prioritized equally.
  • The challenges of our modern world — be it personal, environmental, or societal — can weigh heavily on the mind. As we navigate these complexities, ensuring the mental well-being of our community members remains a shared responsibility.

Carmelo Hernandez, Director of Mental Hygiene and Commissioner of Social Services of Chautauqua County, said, "I am constantly reminded of the power of community in fostering mental well-being. World Mental Health Day isn't just a date on the calendar; it's a commitment we make every day to support, understand, and uplift each other. In Chautauqua County, we are dedicated to ensuring everyone has the resources and understanding to prioritize their mental health. Together, we can build a future where mental well-being is a universal reality."

Established in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), World Mental Health Day serves as a beacon, guiding global awareness and understanding of mental health.

This day reminds us of our collective duty to foster an environment where everyone can access the care they need and feel empowered to speak openly about their mental health without fear of judgment.

Chautauqua County is proud to participate in this global movement. Through awareness and understanding, we can build a stronger, more resilient community where mental health is celebrated, nurtured, and prioritized.
