MAYVILLE, NY — Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. has announced the appointment of Norman Carlson as the new Chautauqua County Historian. This position had been vacant for several months following the retirement of the former historian, Michelle Henry.
Norman Carlson, a native of Busti, brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to local history to his new role. He has spent nearly 30 years as Collections Manager at the Fenton History Center in Jamestown and has been highly active in various local history organizations. Notably, he has volunteered with the Busti Historical Society for fifty years and has been involved with the Busti Bicentennial Committee, reflecting his dedication to preserving and promoting local history.
Chautauqua County Executive Wendel expressed confidence in Carlson’s appointment, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Norman Carlson as our new County Historian. His extensive experience and deep-rooted passion for our local history make him an invaluable asset. I am confident that under his stewardship, the rich historical tapestry of Chautauqua County will continue to be preserved and celebrated for future generations.”
The role of the County Historian is critical for the preservation of Chautauqua County’s history. Carlson will assist other government-appointed historians in towns, villages, and cities throughout the county, serving as a crucial link between them and the State Historian.
Carlson stated, “I’m going to do my best to serve everyone who has a history question. I want people to recognize how important and how interesting history is.”
His responsibilities include promoting interest in local history and history education, attending and promoting significant historical commemorations, encouraging cooperation among local historical societies and agencies, maintaining files and information about the county’s history, and recording events of historical significance as they occur.
